What's a Wyoming beekeeper doing in South Florida?

Not much right now. Hoping for the best, though. Anyone need some help from a Wyoming BWrangler living in Florida?

My wife's likes her new job. We're both enjoying being around her family. And some free time is nice for a change.

It's taken awhile to acclimatize to the heat and humidity. I haven't had a pair of long pants or boots on since leaving Wyoming. Maybe I'll become the Florida BSandaler rather than the Wyoming BWrangler :>)

Not my Wyoming backyard in November.

It's mid November and the coldest weather of the season has arrived, with a low of 56 and a high of 71 degrees. After acclimatizing somewhat, these temps do feel cool. But I'm going to tough it out in shorts and sandals.

Florida Beach Sandaler?

Bees

I've only seen a few honeybees at the house and just a few bee hives out by the big swamp. The fear of AHBs is rampant in southeast Florida. And it's enhanced by the dominant east coast metro culture where all bugs are bad, especially the life threatening, stinging kind. When a feral colony is encounter, it brings out a full emergency response complete with a lock down of the schools, etc.

I watched several city employees open a manhole cover. They put their gloves and hard hats on. Three of them grabbed spray cans and surrounded the cover. While the fourth tossed the cover to one side and ran away. The others guarded his retreat with their insecticide spray.

I'm thinking they must of had a bad experience. But from my own personal experience with AHBs, I don't think those spray cans of wasp killer would have saved them.

Paradise?

Ah, not really. But we were looking for a change and south Florida is certainly that. I'm learning and even growing plants I've never heard of. And I've seen some neat reptiles in my yard. I'm near the ocean which is a new experience. And maybe I'll even get to keep a few bees next season.

The BWrangler and the Beesource guy visited a real Florida beeman.
That's Sam Comfort with some great looking queen cells.

Sam's 700 nuc mating yard mirrors tropical floral colors
and required neither veil or smoke to work.
